Brainwave Journey Generator

Create binaural beats that change over time, for example from alert Beta down to Delta for sleep. Start with a preset or build your own journey stage by stage, listen in your browser, and download a free WAV file. Use it in personal or commercial projects, with no attribution required.

Use stereo headphones to hear the binaural beats. Each ear needs to receive a different tone.

What is a brainwave journey?

A brainwave journey is a binaural beat track that moves through stages. Each stage has its own beat frequency and length, and the beat glides smoothly from one stage to the next. A sleep journey might start in Beta, settle into Alpha, and then drift between Theta and Delta.

Binaural beats use a slightly different tone in each ear. Your brain perceives a beat at the difference between them. With a 200 Hz background hum and a 10 Hz beat, this generator plays 195 Hz in the left ear and 205 Hz in the right. That's why you need stereo headphones.

Intro, loop, and ending

Arrange your stages in three sections: an intro, a repeating loop, and an optional ending. For example, the loop could alternate between Theta and Delta for 8 minutes each, with a gentle lift back to Alpha and Beta after a nap.

With Set by stages, the intro plays once, the loop plays the number of rounds you choose, and the ending plays once. Every stage keeps its full length.

With Pick a length, you set the total duration. The generator reserves time for the ending and fits the intro and loop into the remaining time. You can trim the final stage, adjust the final loop round to finish in its last band, or scale the stage lengths to fit complete rounds. The timeline shows the result. If your chosen duration is shorter than the ending itself, only the ending plays, cut to fit.

Brainwave journey presets

  • Sleep Descent (56:00 by default): From awake down to deep sleep, then rest between Theta and Delta until the music ends. Beta 3 · Alpha 5, then Theta ↔ Delta, 8 min each.
  • Power Nap (28:00 by default): Rest in Theta, then a gentle lift back up in the last 5 minutes. Alpha 3 · Theta until near the end · Alpha 3 · Beta 2.
  • Wind Down (43:00 by default): Ease out of a busy day without drifting off to sleep. Beta 3 · Alpha 10, then Theta 10 ↔ Alpha 5.
  • Deep Meditation (35:00 by default): Settle in through Alpha, then stay in Theta. Alpha 5, then Theta until the end.
  • Calm Presence (22:00 by default): Relaxed but alert. Sits well under voice or a guided session. Beta 2, then Alpha until the end.
  • Focus Blocks (53:00 by default): Long stretches of low Beta with short Alpha breaks. Alpha 3, then Beta 20 ↔ Alpha 5.

Instructions

Play & adjust volume

Choose a preset or “Build from scratch” in step 1, then click “Preview” in step 3. Drag the position slider or click the timeline to listen from a different point. You can edit the journey while it plays and hear your changes. The volume slider is in step 2.

Shape your journey

For each stage, choose a band, a length in minutes, and a beat frequency in Hz. Add stages to the intro, loop, or ending as needed. To reorder stages within a section, drag a stage's handle, or focus the handle and press the up or down arrow key. With “Set by stages”, the minus and plus buttons control how many times the loop plays.

The background hum is the steady tone that carries the beats, also called the carrier frequency. Choose a musical note, a Solfeggio frequency such as 528 Hz, 432 Hz, or pick Custom Hz and type in any value from 40 to 1,000 Hz.

Keep one pitch plays the same hum all the way through. Change with each stage gives every stage its own hum, and Step down with each stage lowers it as the journey goes deeper; starting from a Solfeggio frequency, it steps down through the lower Solfeggio frequencies.

Between stages sets the transition time in seconds, limited to half the next stage's length. Set it to 0 for an immediate change. When the hum changes too, “Crossfade” blends the pitches and “Slide” moves continuously from one pitch to the next.

Choose Save as preset to keep your sequence in this browser. You'll find it under “Your presets” here and in the Audio Enhancer when using the same browser on this device. Saving with an existing name replaces that preset.

Export a WAV file

Click “Export locally” to download the full journey as a stereo WAV file, using your current volume setting. The duration matches the timeline, up to 3 hours. The file has a 5-second fade at the start and another at the end. A one-hour journey is about 635 MB.

Keep this page open until the export finishes. If your browser shows a save dialog, choose a file name and location. Otherwise, the file downloads when it's ready, usually to your Downloads folder.

File won't open on mobile

Some mobile browsers ignore the file name and extension, so the file may be saved as “download” or without “.wav”. If it won't open, rename it so it ends in .wav, for example zenmix-journey-export.wav.

If you run into a problem, email hello@zenmix.io and tell us which browser and device you're using. For a single steady beat, try our Binaural Beat Generator.

Brainwave bands

The stages take their names from brainwave bands used in brainwave entrainment audio. Listening to a beat at a matching frequency doesn't guarantee that you'll enter the associated state. Start with a journey you enjoy and adjust it from there.

Band Beat range Brainwave association
Delta 0.5–4 Hz Deep sleep
Theta 4–8 Hz Drowsiness and light sleep
Alpha 8–14 Hz Relaxed wakefulness
Beta 14–38 Hz Alertness and active thinking
Gamma 39–42 Hz Attention and sensory processing

These are the adjustable ranges in this generator. Brainwave band boundaries vary between sources; gamma is a broader band than the 39–42 Hz range offered here.
