Monaural Beats Generator

Create monaural beats, listen in your browser, and download a free WAV file. Choose the pitch and beat speed, or combine several beats in one track. Use your audio in personal or commercial projects, with no attribution required.

You can listen with speakers or headphones. If the default 120 Hz tone sounds faint on your phone or laptop, try headphones or raise the base frequency below.

4–8 Hz. The difference between the two tones. A 10 Hz beat pulses 10 times per second.

20–1000 Hz. The lower tone: 120 Hz, mixed with 128 Hz and played in both ears.

What are monaural beats?

Monaural beats are the pulses you hear when two steady tones with slightly different frequencies are mixed together. As the sound waves reinforce and cancel each other, the volume rises and falls in a regular pattern.

The beat frequency is the difference between the two tones. For example, mixing 120 Hz and 130 Hz produces 10 beats per second: a 10 Hz beat. That's the speed of the pulsing you hear, rather than a separate 10 Hz tone.

Monaural beats, binaural beats, and isochronic tones: what's the difference?

Binaural beats send a different tone to each ear through stereo headphones. Your brain processes the difference as a beat. With monaural beats, the tones are mixed in the audio itself. Both ears receive that mix, so you can use speakers too.

Isochronic tones also work without headphones, but use a single tone that switches on and off at regular intervals. Monaural beats get their rhythm from the two tones overlapping. Try both to see which sound you prefer.

Instructions

Play & adjust volume

Choose a beat and click Preview to listen. Add it to your mix to combine it with other beats. Use the play button and volume slider in each mix row to listen and adjust its volume. Pause all stops the mix without removing any tracks.

Customize frequencies

The base frequency sets the pitch of the lower tone. The beat frequency sets the gap between that tone and the higher one, which controls how fast the sound pulses. Type a value or use the minus and plus buttons to adjust it. You can change the beat frequency in 0.1 Hz steps within each preset's range, and the base frequency from 20 to 1,000 Hz. “Reset to default” restores the selected preset's original frequencies.

Export a WAV file

With at least one beat added to your mix, select the length under “Track length” and click “Export locally” to download your monaural beats as a WAV file. All beats in your mix are included at their current volume, even when paused. Previewing a beat does not add it to the export.

Keep this page open until the export finishes. If your browser shows a save dialog, choose a file name and location. Otherwise, the file downloads when it's ready, usually to your Downloads folder.

File won't open on mobile

Some mobile browsers ignore the file name and extension, so the file may be saved as “download” or without “.wav”. If it won't open, rename it so it ends in .wav, for example zenmix-monaural-export.wav.

If you run into a problem, email hello@zenmix.io and tell us which browser and device you're using. For an overview of other tones, see our healing frequencies guide.

Monaural beat presets

The presets take their names from brainwave bands used in brainwave entrainment audio. Listening to a beat at a matching frequency doesn't guarantee that you'll enter the associated state. Start with a sound you enjoy and adjust it from there.

Preset Beat range Brainwave association
Delta 0.5–4 Hz Deep sleep
Theta 4–8 Hz Drowsiness and light sleep
Alpha 8–14 Hz Relaxed wakefulness
Beta 14–38 Hz Alertness and active thinking
Gamma 39–42 Hz Attention and sensory processing

These are the adjustable ranges in this generator. Brainwave band boundaries vary between sources; gamma is a broader band than the 39–42 Hz range offered here.
